Our Story
How do we help struggling students in the FI program to minimize transfers to the English track? That is the question! In 2010/2011, the administration and primary teaching staff at our school struck a partnership with the faculty of education at the University of Toronto. This partnership resulted in a tutoring program to assist struggling primary students with reading. After three months, observations showed that the biggest hurdle encountered by these students was the mastery of sound/symbol relationships, phonological awareness difficulties and a lack of basic vocabulary. The results of this inquiry led to the creation of the resource, Écoutons, lisons, rions! A project eight years in the making, the resource is designed to promote early literacy skills for primary FI students learning French in an anglophone milieu.
About the Resouce
Écoutons, lisons, rions! is a resource uniquely designed to promote early French literacy skills for students learning French as a second language in an anglophone milieu. The comical comptines, stories and language games presented in the book contextualize the teaching of early French literacy skills (i.e.: comprehension, vocabulary development, basic sounds, phonological awareness, inferences/critical thinking) to develop a student’s ability to understand, speak, read and write in French.
